 11U/12U POTATOES COACHES

Ava Montesano

ASSISTANT COACH - 11U/12U POTATOES (6V6)

Ava’s love for volleyball started when she was just 6 years old, playing at VolleyGirls development sessions. She began her rep volleyball career when she was 10, joining her older sister, Myah, on 13U Smash Supersonics. Ava is going into her 7th year playing with the club, receiving several awards along the way including the OVA Award of Excellence (13U), MVP (15U), and the Integrity Award (16U).

Her passion for volleyball has given her many different opportunities that she is extremely grateful for. This includes travelling to South Korea for the International Children’s Games to compete against different countries from all over the world. Also, she was selected for Team Ontario White in 2023 where she trained among the top 60 athletes in the 15U Division in all of Ontario.

This is Ava’s first year as a coach, and she hopes to bring that same feeling of excitement to grow as an athlete and a person to the 11 and 12 year old’s who are just at the beginning of their volleyball career.

Larissa Howard-Montesano

ASSISTANT COACH - 11U/12U POTATOES (6v6)

Larissa’s love for the game began at age 10.  She played for her school teams in elementary and secondary school, recreationally as an adult, and still continues to, on occasion.  She would have loved to play at the club level,  however, is so grateful to her kids for taking her along for their ride.  The Montesanos have been a part of the SRVC family since 2018.  Her oldest daughter graduated playing 18U with Velocity and her youngest currently competes in 17U with Boom.

She always felt so lucky that her girls chose the game that she loves!  Larissa truly misses the days of doing drills with her daughters in their home’s family room and driveway and would like to encourage the 10-year-olds of this generation who are eager to learn and play the game to do so.

In the past, Larissa has been a part of development programs with SRVC, Dofasco house league, and VolleyGirls.  This will be her 2nd year as an assistant coach with Smash.

Building confidence in athletes by teaching proper technique, enhancing basic skills and agility, demonstrating teamwork, and instilling a lifelong love for the game are her goals for this team.

Robyn Smith

ASSISTANT COACH - 11U/12U POTATOES (6v6)

This is Robyn’s first year coaching at SRVC. She’s played and competed in multiple sports and was first introduced to volleyball in high school. Her love for the game grew as she continued playing through university and then OVA and women’s league volleyball until just a few years ago. She also has experience coaching gymnastics and volleyball. Robyn’s main goal is to create a supportive team environment, build confidence in the players and help foster a love for the game.

Off the court, Robyn works as a scientist and enjoys spending time with her family and supporting her two daughters’ sports teams.

Matthew Smith

HEAD COACH - 11U/12U POTATOES (6v6)

Matt’s volleyball road started in high school where he played for a variety of rep teams and continued through university while balancing training as a varsity rugby player. It was here that he created strong bonds with some of his closest friends and learned many valuable life lessons. He believes that the strength of a team lies not just in an individual’s talents, but in the unity forged through shared experiences. He believes in the importance of simultaneously developing athletes who excel on the court while nurturing individual growth in every aspect of their lives. By focusing on the development of the whole person, we create not just better athletes, but better teammates, leaders, and community members.

Matt is an intermediate teacher who has been coaching the junior and senior boys and girls’ volleyball throughout his 15-year career. When he’s not coaching, Matt can be found behind the wheel, driving his two daughters to their gymnastics training sessions or competitions.
