Phil Zylstra

Assistant Coach 18U Nitro

Phil was born and raised in Waterdown and now is still living close by in community of Millgrove. Phil has been in the horticulture industry for over 30 years and self employed for the past 28 years.

Phil is fairly new to the sport of volleyball and this is his first year as an assistant coach, but he’s not new to sports. Phil has coached all 4 of his daughters soccer teams for more than 15 years. He has a passion to see players be active, to challenge themselves, and have fun while developing their skills and abilities. He has a desire to inspire athletes to excel in whatever they do and help build tomorrow’s leaders.

Daniela Spoljar

Assistant Coach 18U Nitro

Daniela began playing volleyball at the age of 10 as part of a houseleague program.  When she saw how much her older sister loved playing for SMASH, she decided to tryout and made the 13U team.  Daniela stayed with SMASH for her entire rep volleyball career and has both indoor and beach experience.  Daniela also played volleyball all 4 years of high school and was team captain all 4 years and MVP for 2 years.  Daniela’s biggest accomplishment was finishing 3rd in the province and 2nd in Canada in her 14U year.

Daniela is currently in her second year of university at McMaster where she is pursuing her undergraduate degree in Environment and Society, with the hopes of going to law school.  This is her third year as an Assistant Coach, and she began coaching because she wanted to give back to the club that had given her so much.  Daniela is eager to help the 18U Nitro athletes grow and hopes to continuing doing what she can to help them become the best athletes they can be.
