 14U EXPLOSION COACHES

Julie McElroy-Morris

Head Coach 14U Explosion

Julie’s involvement with volleyball began at the age of 10. She was encouraged along the way by her middle school teacher and coach, Kelly Kawamoto.  Julie was sidelined by a knee injury at the age of 18, but continued to play recreationally until a few years ago.

Julie is a high school teacher by trade, but recently began working as the Chief Negotiator for the OSSTF Union.  She coached both girls and boys high school volleyball at Westdale and Sherwood from 1998 – 2010.  This is Julie’s third year coaching with SRVC, and she is excited to continue working with 14U Explosion as the Head Coach. She looks forward to celebrating all of the successes and accomplishments of the team throughout the season. Julie’s philosophy is a whole player approach, which includes not only aptitude and skills related to volleyball, but also good mental and physical health of the athlete

In her spare time, Julie can be found helping out on her kids’ sports teams, reading, cooking or planning her next getaway.

Tom McChesney

Assistant Coach 16U Rockets & 14U Explosion

Tom McChesney is glad to be a part of the Smash Raiders family, where is two daughters are also athletes. Coaching youth sports has always been a passion for him and he’s been around the sport of volleyball as a coach and a player for over 10 years. Tom continues to play rec league but is much more passionate about the coaching side. He also coaches house league soccer and is currently the head coach of the Ancaster High senior boys basketball team. Tom was the assistant coach with McMaster Marauder’s men’s basketball team from 2013-18.

Larissa Howard-Montesano

Assistant Coach 14U Explosion

Larissa’s love for the game began at age 10.  She played for her school teams in elementary and secondary school, recreationally as an adult, and still continues to, on occasion.  She would have loved to play at the club level,  however, is so grateful to her kids for taking her along for their ride.  The Montesanos have been a part of the SRVC family since 2018.  Her oldest daughter graduated playing 18U with Velocity and her youngest currently competes in 18U with Boom.

She always felt so lucky that her girls chose the game that she loves!  Larissa truly misses the days of doing drills with her daughters in their home’s family room and driveway and would like to encourage the 10-year-olds of this generation who are eager to learn and play the game to do so.

In the past, Larissa has been a part of development programs with SRVC, Dofasco house league, and VolleyGirls.  This will be her 3rd year as an assistant coach with Smash.

Building confidence in athletes by teaching proper technique, enhancing basic skills and agility, demonstrating teamwork, and instilling a lifelong love for the game are her goals for this team.
